IRCTC increases tariff rates for meals, food items

Rail passengers planning to grab a quick bite at the station before starting their journey must consider carrying a few extra bucks. The instant breakfast or meal you plan to eat at ‘affordable’ price at the station, would cost you more as IRCTC has revised the menu and price of food items sold at refreshment rooms and Jan Ahaar outlets in stations.

Railway Board (RB) has issued circular in this effect to all Zonal managers, advising them to revise the menu and price of food items consequent upon notification of revised menu and tariff of standard meals for mail/express trains.

Philip Varghese, director (Tourism & Catering) Railway Board, in his circular dated December 12, 2019 (copy available with DT Next) has asked IRCTC and all Zonal railways to ensure ‘visible improvement’ in the quality and hygiene of food following the price hike.

Going by the revised tariff fixed by the board, price of food items would increase by minimum of Rs 10. For instance, the veg and non-veg breakfast has been increased to Rs 35 and 45 respectively from earlier Rs 25/30. The hot idli, pongal and upma with vada would cost you an extra Rs 10. Price of biriyani veg/chicken has been fixed at Rs 70/100 respectively.

The board has given specific instructions to the Zonal railways to carry out intensive inspections to keep a tab on quality and make sure the tariff revision does not accrue any undue benefit to the service providers.
