Corporation initiates Miyawaki method for ‘Green Tiruchy’
As a part of the afforestation drive in the city, the Tiruchy Corporation, in association with the HR and CE, has initiated the ‘Forest in the City’ project, following Miyawaki method and planted around 10,000 saplings of native varieties on Friday to ensure a dense forest in a short period.

The corporation, after obtaining permission from the HR and CE that manages Srirangam Ranganathaswamy temple, cleared a 1.25-acre land situated on the South Devi Street on the temple premises. The afforestation drive was initiated by Corporation Commissioner S Sivasubramanian.
Following the Miyawaki method, the planting of saplings was made at the rate of three saplings on one square metre of land. Around 10,000 saplings were thus planted by the corporation officials and workers. All the saplings were of the native breed, including pungai (pongamia pinnata), mahogany (sweitenia mahogany), guava (psidium guava) and mango.
The civic body has used manure produced by its micro compost centres and cow-dung sourced from the Srirangam temple’s shelter to ensure growth of the saplings and has decided to establish a walking tracks to enable residents to walk through the mini forest which would certainly energise them.
Volunteers from various organisations have joined the drive.
Recently, city-based NGO Shine TREEchy initiated a Miyawaki forest on 2,000 sq ft land and planted around 180 native saplings at Armoury Gate in Poonmallee locality.
Among the 180 saplings, 18 fruit-bearing trees like mango, guava and gooseberry were planted closely with 2 to 2.5 feet gap between thesaplings.
The organisers said that they have opted the Miyawaki method as it requires only a small area of land to grow a dense forest in the city.
