7 kg gold, concealed in portable air-coolers, seized in Coimbatore
Officials of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence here seized nearly seven kg of gold smuggled from Sharjah to Coimbatore International Airport on Sunday.

Acting on a tip-off, the DRI sleuths intercepted two passengers, Mohammed Sharukhan (19) and Hameemu Aktar (21), both hailing from Sivagangai district as they came by Air Arabia flight to Coimbatore.
Both of them were carrying portable air-coolers. When they were dismantled, the officials found heavy-weight silver-coloured metal concealed in the motor of the air-coolers.
“On further examination, the officers found that gold bars were coated with mercury. Following this, the mercury was removed and 6.997 kg of gold valued at Rs 2.74 crore was seized. Both the passengers were arrested and remanded in judicial custody,” said a statement by Satish. G, Deputy Director, DRI, Coimbatore.
