Full bench says ‘no’ to renaming of MHC

The minutes of the meeting of the full court revealed that since Puducherry falls within the administrative jurisdiction of the Madras High Court it would not be fair to change the name to Tamil Nadu High Court.

The full court also noted that the name of Madras High Court can continue to be similar to what prevailed as Mumbai High Court and Kolkata High Court.

This is in sequel to a long pending demand seeking to change the name of Madras High Court to Tamil Nadu HC. Based on several representations, the Central Government had sought the opinion of the full court in this regard.

The full court in its minutes also decided to dismiss three judicial officers for corruption and inefficiency. 

It also permitted criminal prosecution of one of the dismissed district judges under the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, while another judge was given five increment cuts and placed under strict watch.
