Party, alliance won defying many odds, says DMK president Stalin

Stalin, in a statement, alleged that the DMK led alliance won the elections despite the ruling party’s “misuse of power” and the Tamil Nadu State Election Commission’s (TNSEC) “one-sided” approach.

“Our party’s victory margin would have been huge if the urban local body polls had been held simultaneously with the rural local body elections,” he added.

Claiming that the local body results have clearly proved that the power of people can overcome any kind of atrocity, Stalin said the poll results is also an evidence that the people have faith in the DMK and that there is hatred for the ruling AIADMK.

Reiterating his claim that the ruling AIADMK was afraid of conducting polls since they would lose it, the DMK leader said, “that is why the local body polls was held only in December last year instead of October 2016 itself.”

“The AIADMK leaders are also afraid of meeting the people and that is why they deliberately delayed conducting the election as per the schedule,” he added.He said, since DMK always wanted to hold this local body election in a proper manner by looking into all aspects of delimitations, reservations and rotation of seats, the party had moved the court. “Only, after the directions of Madras High Court and Supreme Court, the State Election Commission had agreed to conduct elections.”

Blaming the ruling party for creating several hurdles during the counting of votes, Stalin alleged that with the help of the State Election Commission, the AIADMK also prevented the DMK candidates from winning. Pointing out that the family members of several AIADMK leaders have lost this poll, he said, “this shows people are angry with the ruling party.”

The DMK leader said that the polls have shown several positive features like the victory secured up by three elderly women aged 82 (in Tirupur), 79 (in Melur) and 73 (in Thovalai), a female college student, a transgender and conservancy lady staff in a local body getting elected to head the same body.
