Engg students’ performance dips to 60 pc in 2019
The overall performance of engineering students in the State has come down in 2019 by at least 10% as compared to the previous year. Higher education department officials claim that it could be related to the 1,000+ professor posts still lying vacant in government and government- aided engineering and polytechnic colleges.

Sources from Directorate of Technical Education (DOTE), which did not release detailed results of the students, said that according to data, in 2018 the overall pass percentage was 70% but in 2019, the overall pass percentage was 60%. Also, in 2018, more than 10 students secured university rank. However, in 2019, only one studentwas able to do so. Similarly, theoverall percentage of students in such institutions also dropped. In 2018, it was 80% and in 2019, pass percentage was 73%.
Sources from the Higher Education Department told DT Next that currently, there are about 1,100 lecturers and professors posts lying vacant in both State-run engineering and polytechnic colleges. Of the total, only about 200 temporary lecturers could be filled in.
A senior official from the Tamil Nadu Teachers Recruitment Board (TRB) said, the notification to recruit 1,060 lecturers and professors was issued only on November 27, 2019.
“However, due to technical reasons, applications processed online were suspended,” he said, adding date of receiving application will be announced shortly.
The official pointed out that most vacancies (219) exists in the Mechanical Engineering department.
“In Computer Engineering, the number of vacancies is 135,” he said, adding in Electronics and Communication Engineering, the number of vacancies 119.
At present TN has 10 governments, three government-aided and 20 constituent engineering colleges, 51 government, 34 government-aided and 4 affiliated polytechnic colleges.
