The woman, identified as Pandiselvi, the wife of Gopalakrishnan of Keelarajakularaman, however, survived the suicide bid. The deceased victims were identified as her two-and-a-half-year-old son Bhagatvaran and four-and-a-half-year-old daughter Vaishnavi, sources said.

According to Rajapalayam North Inspector of Police P Parthiban, the incident took place at a farmland in the same locality.  Upon inquiries, it was found that some of the locals present near the well heard the woman scream, and the villagers managed to rescue her, thinking that she suffered an accidental fall.

However, the Inspector said Pandiselvi took the extreme step of committing suicide with her children over loneliness. The police official said her husband, Gopalakrishnan, who was employed as a cook at a hotel in Bengaluru, used to visit his family at the village once a month. Moreover, Pandiselvi’s mother had recently moved to her sister’s house to assist her during pregnancy, after which she committed the act.

Responding to a rescue call, the Fire and Rescue Services personnel managed to retrieve the bodies of the two children. Their mother, who survived the attempt, was admitted to the Rajapalayam government hospital.

Based on a complaint, a case was filed against Pandiselvi under Sections 302 and 309 of the IPC. Pandiselvi was subsequently arrested, the Inspector said.
