A nine-member group from Coimbatore, which usually treks during the holiday season at the Reserve Forest (RF) area had planned to trek the area between Kunjurpatihi and Manguzhi early on Sunday and had not obtained permission either.

While the group was near Tholampalyam East beat, a lone elephant suddenly came in front of them and attacked the woman who was in the front and killed her on the spot. Her husband and seven others managed to escape. The woman has been identified as P Bhuvaneshwari, a resident from Ganapathy in Coimbatore and an employee in a private firm in Coimbatore. The body was taken to the Coimbatore Medical College forpost mortem.

Narrow escape: Five people travelling from Thalavadi hillock in Sathyamangalam-Mysore national highway in a car to Coimbatore on Sunday were stopped by a wild elephant near Asanur forest region on Sunday. Thought the driver tried to reverse the car and escape, the pachyderm hit the wind shields of the car and was standing very close to the vehicle. By this time, local residents managed to drive the elephant away and it later entered the forest.
