Police said Adam Shah, an industrialist, had gone to see his son in Thoothukudi along with his family members by locking the house on January 24, when the incident happened.

On his return on Sunday night, the family was shocked to find the rear door of his house at Masakalipalayam broke open. “The burglars opened the locker using keys kept in the bureau. Over 100 sovereigns of gold jewels and Rs 10 lakh kept in it were burgled,” the police said.

On receiving information, a police team from Singanallur station led by Deputy Commissioner ES Uma rushed to the spot and held inquiries. A sniffer dog, which was pressed into service, ran till the street corner and stood clueless.

Finger print experts said that they have taken one chance print from the locker. It is being matched with the existing prints of habitual offenders, said a cop.

The police said that the house did not have a CCTV camera, but images recorded in camera fixed in some commercial establishments in the nearby street are being checked to trace the culprits.

“The house is located in one of the busiest neighbourhoods, which sees public movement till late into night. We suspect the burglars to be known to the family. However, further investigations are on,” said a senior police official.Three special teams have been formed to probe the case.
