History students clean arms room of Vellore fort

According to the sources, while the History Department of DKM Arts and Science College sought permission from the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to undertake cleaning of an old temple at Melpadi, ASI officials suggested that they could undertake similar works inside the Vellore fort’s arms room as Melpadi was far away and the Vellore fort also required sprucing up. “As they were history students, they understood the importance of old sculptures and we knew that they will work without damaging the statues,” sources added.

The DKM College Secretary K Maninathan said that 20 undergraduate and 14 post graduate students participated in the day long work. The ASI sources revealed that the work would become a part of their regular project as it would benefit the ASI in the long run.

According to officials, plans were afoot to throw open the prison complex inside the historic Vellore fort that once housed freedom fighters by the end of March. Also, plans are in place to construct a park and pathway to connect the park in order to attract more visitors.
