    Ganja peddler among 6 held for student’s murder

    The rural police here on Friday took into custody six persons, including a ganja peddler, for stabbing a college student to death after he resisted their attempt to snatch his mobile phone.

    The deceased, D Tamil Selvan from Sulur and studying at a private engineering college in Kalapatti, was returning home after doing a project work at a nearby computer centre on a two-wheeler on the night of February 15, when the assailants intercepted and attempted to snatch away his mobile phone.  


    When Tamil Selvan resisted and fought back, the accused stabbed him with a knife on the left side of his chest leaving him seriously injured.


    According to the police, Tamil Selvan, who managed to retain his cell phone, had called up his parents and informed them. Due to profuse bleeding, he then collapsed on the spot.


    His father Danushkodi, a construction worker, and other family members, rushed to the spot and took him to a private hospital, but he was declared brought dead.


    Based on images recorded on a CCTV camera fixed in the locality, the Sulur police picked up the six persons involved in the murder from a hideout.


    The accused have been identified as Mohan (21), a ganja peddler; Surya (19), Sathish Kumar (20), Ganesh Vetrivel (20), Vijayakumar (21) and Mohanraj (18), all hailing from different areas in Coimbatore.


    Of them, Mohan has been facing multiple cases, including murder, attempt to murder and ganja peddling, in the Singanallur police station limits. He had been into supplying ganja mainly to students studying in different colleges.


    Inquiries revealed that they had frequently waylaid people visiting an ATM centre in Saravanampatty area and forced them to withdraw money.


    The police have seized the two bikes and knife used on the day of offence.
