VOC Port sets record in handling container cargo traffic
VO Chidambaranar Port in Thoothukudi, the economic engine of southern region, has set a record in handling containerised cargo by surpassing its previous financial year’s feat by handling 7.41 lakh Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (TEUs) as against its last financial year’s traffic container of 7.39 lakh TEUs.

The port has achieved the feat on March 2, 2020 with a growth of 9.51 per cent of traffic during the corresponding period of previous year (6.76 lakh TEUs). Much to the credit of VOC Port, cargo shipments including imports and exports has hit an all-time high, during the financial year so far a record of 33.11 million tonnes of cargo has been moving through the Port hence resulting in an increase of 5.30 percent over the last financial year’s corresponding performance of 31.44 million tonnes, a statement said on Wednesday.
TK Ramachandran, Chairman of VOC Port Trust expressed immense pleasure and thanked container terminal operators, container shipping lines, container freight stations, Custom House Agents, officers and employees of the Port who have contributed to achieve the feat. He further stated that “Leveraging on its strategic location, seamless road and rail connectivity, productivity of the terminal operators and efficient services, the pre-eminent seaport of Tamil Nadu in container handling, will contribute to continued volume growth and propel the Port to greater heights.”
Hailing the achievement, JP Joe Villavarayar, former president of All India Chamber of Commerce and Industries, Thoothukudi, said, with some more days left for the fiscal year to end, the volume of cargo handling in containers is expected to increase further. With improved infrastructure facility at the second container terminal, it is playing a crucial role in the movement of cargo, he said.
