Though he made it look like an act by rival groups, his drama fell flat when police verified the CCTV footage near his house. Subsequently, the functionary and two of his associates were held for burning the vehicle.
Police said, M Sakthivel (38), a resident of Athavasthur and Manikandam Union Hindu Munnani organiser, was active in organising pro-CAA protest and rallies in the district.
According to Sakthivel, he heard an unusual sound on Tuesday night when everyone was asleep. “When I came out to check what had happened, my motorcycle was going up in flames and the window glasses were damaged,” he said
On hearing his cries neighbours rushed to his house and doused the fire. But, by that time bike was fully destroyed. The next morning, Sakthivel lodged a complaint with the Manikandam police, who regconducted an inquiry.
At this stage a twist occurred in the case when police checkedthe CCTV footage in the locality and found out that Sakthivel conspired with his relative Mukesh and a friend N Sakthivel and burnt his bike.
During inquiry, the trio confessed to having burnt the bike of Sakthivel as he had failed to pay the EMI. The police later rejected the rival group theory in the bike burning issue.
