The revenue, when compared to the previous year, has not witnessed any growth or decline as the revenue in 2018-19 was Rs 31,157.83 crore. With a month’s time the revenue for 2019-20 will also exceed Rs 31,000 crore.

Out of the total revenue of Rs 28,839.08 crore, excise revenue was Rs 6,606.32 crore and the revenue from VAT was Rs 22,232.75 crore. In the last five years, except for 2017-18, the revenue from Tasmac has witnessed a steady rise.

Thangamani also said that for the first time the ban on sale of liquor in the State was introduced in 1937 but the ban was relaxed during the DMK rule in 1971. Since then the sale of liquor in the State has increased but the ruling AIADMK government is taking all steps to reduce the number of liquor shops.

“From 6,700 Tasmac shops the State has reduced the number of liquor shops to 5,299. The numbers will be gradually reduced”, said Thangamani.

    Intra-country beer export declines

TN Minister for Electricity and Prohibition P Thangamani on Friday said that export of beer to other states has declined resulting in reduction of revenue from beer export. According to the data presented by Thangamani, in the assembly, the total export of beer cases to other states in India, from April 2019to February 2020, is only 19,91,892 while the previous year, 2018-19, recorded an export of 35,58,900 cases. Though the export of beer cases to foreign countries have increased from 8,850 in 2018-19 to 26,918 cases till February 29, the total revenue has declined from Rs 577.91 lakhs in 2018-19 to Rs 339.88 lakhs, till February 29, due to the sharp decline in intra-country export of beer cases.
