1st drunk driving arrest in Chengalpattu after HC fiat
Days after Madras High Court directing the police to arrest those indulging in drunk driving as per Section 202 of the Motor Vehicles Act, the Chengalpattu police on Wednesday arrested a 36-year-old man for driving his two-wheeler drunk near Chengalpattu on Monday.
Chennai
This is reportedly the first time a person has been arrested for drunk driving as the police usually collects fine for such a grave offence.
The man was identified as V Suresh, a plumber from Agadeswarar Nagar in Tirukazhukundram. The Chengalpattu Town police who were checking vehicles near the new bus stand intercepted Suresh and found that he had consumed liquor. He was taken to the Chengalpattu government hospital for a test. The police filed a FIR against Suresh despite him pleading to be let off with a fine. However, the police registered a case and produced Suresh before the Chengalpattu Judicial Magistrate, who remanded him in 15-day judicial custody.
