The government’s attempt comes against the backdrop of requests from several State-run schools, including private institutions, that all the portions of the syllabus could not be covered due to the lockdown.

According to the new schedule, the Class 10 board exams have been fixed from June 15-25 with more than 9.5 lakh students across the State appearing for it.

A senior official from the Directorate of School Education told DT Next that TN is being forced to conduct the exams since the Centre hasn’t allowed authorities to cancel the board exam. “It (Centre) also did not allow us to only hold exams for major subjects like Mathematics, Science and Social Science avoiding Tamil and English languages,” he added.

The official pointed out that the decision to reduce the pass percentage will be taken only after reviewing student’s performance during answer scripts evaluation. “There is also a possibility that the government might announce all pass for those who appeared for SSLC exams,” he said, pointing out that it would be a difficult process to set the new question paper again by reducing the portions, which is the only other option.

The official claimed all school managements were strictly asked to contact their respective students of Class 10 and their parents and allay their fears so they would come to the exam centre without hesitation.

The official said that certain private schools, especially those in the city, were against declaring all pass for students since they had completed all portions of the syllabus via online classes.
