Similarly, the National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL) - IIT Madras has also begun enrolment for more than 400 online courses. Accordingly, the registration process for new admissions to BE and BTech programmes for Children of Indian Workers in Gulf countries (CIWGC), Non-Resident Indians (NRI) and Foreign Nationals (FN) categories will be done online.

Sources from Anna University said more than a thousand students are expected to enroll for UG programmes. Those who have completed 12 years of school education or equivalent with Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry as main subjects can apply. The centre also conducts foreign language courses such as German, French and Japanese for faculty members and students. Also, the centre supports exchange of faculty and students on short and long-term basis to institutions with which it has signed MoU.

IIT Madras sources said the online courses are completely free and open to everyone across the world. A nominal fee only will be charged only for those interested in taking examinations for certification. Students and working professionals can take up NPTEL courses to supplement their university syllabus on the subject.

In the context of COVID-19 pandemic and the nationwide lockdown, learners can combine NPTEL courses with their mainstream syllabus and students can take the course examination for credits in their transcript.

The institute has also launched a new initiative in which eminent professors from various departments will deliver online lectures about engineering streams. The initiative is expected to benefit the Class 12 students who clear the Public Examinations this year and will be taking up counselling shortly. The sessions will help them identify a discipline that is best aligned with their interests. This will also be available to everyone free of cost.
