Veda Nilayam: Failure to anticipate legal heir issue causes friction in AIADMK

The recent Madras High Court order stating J Deepa, niece of former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa as the legal heir and the press briefings by Deepa claiming rights over the Poes Garden bungalow has created heated debate among AIADMK seniors.

A section of senior party men opine that the top brass had failed to address Deepa’s episode suitably, thus paving way for legal and unnecessary controversies.

Further, the proposal of the state to convert the Poes Garden bungalow into Chief Minister’s Office has also not gone well among the leaders and cadre. “Cutting across factions, Amma followers want a memorial at a Poes Garden, but we object the idea of converting Veda Nilayam into CM office,” said ousted AIADMK leader KC Palaniswami. For instance, if DMK comes to power, they will misuse the residence of our beloved leader. The party should hold talks with Deepa and Deepak and convert the house into a memorial, Palaniswami opined.

“Veda Nilayam is like a temple for AIADMK followers, the cadre want a memorial in that place and the state is legally empowered to acquire the land so that the public demand is addressed,” said AIADMK leader and former Rajya Sabha MP V Maithreyan. Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami will certainly execute the demand of AIADMK cadre, Maithreyan said. In my view, if Deepa drags the issue legally, the government will also explore legal options, he added.

With less than ten months for elections, the party should rope in all the sulking factions. The party can compensate Deepa and Deepak through discussions, opined an AIADMK MLA stating that the party’s approach towards Deepa will bring in an adverse image. Further with AMMK leader Sasikala’s release expected anytime, the AIADMK should please all sulking factions at the earliest, the MLA added.
