Her plight came to light after she took to social media and sought help from her friends. The woman, who got married to a farmer from Alangattu Thottam at Vavikadai area near Perundurai in Erode 17 years ago, has two children— a 16-year-old son and a 15-year-old daughter.

Their family life turned sour when the woman developed an addiction towards social media a few years ago, which grew worse day by day as she spent hours chatting with unknown people regularly.

On knowing that the woman has developed a friendship with an unknown man, the husband tonsured her forcefully after tying her up in their farm. Following this, she was locked in a room to ensure that nobody gets to know about this incident. The woman, who managed to reach out to her friends through social media, informed the Social Welfare Department officials. The officials acted swiftly and rescued her from the house on Tuesday.

High drama prevailed when the man, who was unaware of the rescue, chased and stopped the officials and tried to take her back home.

A video of the incident with the woman refusing to go with her husband and begging officials not to send her with him went viral on social media. The man, however, claimed that his wife was mentally disturbed and that she was tonsured because of her illness. The officials upon rescuing her had initiated an inquiry for further action.
