If speculations from Sathyamurthy Bhavan corridors were something to go by, more than a couple of MPs are vying for the TNCC chief post. It has been learnt that Sivaganga MP Karti P Chidambaram has been working overtime to reach out to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in this regard. Though Karti’s camp has officially refused to engage such an idea, supporters of his father P Chidambaram have been floating theories that the former minister had consented to his son bidding for the TNCC chief post. Karti has been actively attending relief material distribution works during the last fortnight.

Chidambaram loyalist, privy to the plans, told DT Next that an AICC in charge for the state has also seconded the idea of Chidambaram junior helming the state party unit. The loyalist claimed that Chidambaram had a word with his friend and Congress leader Ahmed Patel in this regard.

Admitting to acrimony between TNCC chief KS Alagiri and Chidambaram following the suspension of a district president close to the latter, a senior Congress functionary, said, “Indeed, Chidambaram was unhappy with Alagiri for not revoking the suspension of the district president. Apart from that, he is content with the performance of the TNCC chief.”

“Some disgruntled elements are trying to exploit the acrimony to their advantage. Alagiri has only completed a litter over a year. He will continue till next year’s Assembly elections. High command is least bothered about changing the guard in TNCC at the moment,” the senior leader added.

The squabble between TNCC leadership and some functionaries did not discourage a few MPs from throwing in their hats. A couple of MPs from northern and western Tamil Nadu have started exploring their chances by reaching out to their AICC contacts in New Delhi.
