The Tamil Nadu government has been transparent in reporting COVID-19 deaths and none can hide information, Chief Minister K Palaniswami said on Thursday, rejecting claims of under-reporting of fatalities.

“How could deaths be shown less? if somebody dies of COVID-19, the media shows and people come to know. This cannot be hidden. For the government, it serves no good by hiding deaths. The government has been transparent in giving details of those screened, those cured and died of the infection through the Health Department,” Palaniswami said to the media after inaugurating a two-tier flyover in Salem district.
A day after the government set up a reconciliation committee to look into alleged mismatch of COVID-19 deaths, Palaniswami said it was issuing a COVID-19 bulletin on a daily basis furnishing data on aspects including testing, recoveries, active cases and deaths.
Reiterating that there is no community spread of the infection, he said that more cases have been identified only due to increased testing.
“More positive cases have emerged in Chennai because of its high density population,” he said. Community transmission occurs when the disease is contracted from the community and the virus has spread so much that the source is untraceable. On the other hand, local transmission occurs, when those who were infected and have a travel history spread the virus to close friends or family.
