    Heatwave, monsoon may bring light rain to city

    The southwest monsoon and heatwave may bring light rainfall at some areas of the city in the next 24 hours, said Regional Metrological Centre officials on Sunday.

    A few districts in Tamil Nadu are also likely to receive heavy rainfall for the next 48 hours, officials added.

    “Due to southwest monsoon and heatwave, heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over ghat areas of Coimbatore, The Nilgiris, Theni, and Dindigul districts for the next 48 hours. In Chennai, the sky is likely to be cloudy, and light rain to occur in some areas for the next 24 hours,” said N Puviarasan, Director of Regional Metrological Centre, Chennai.

    On Sunday, that the maximum and minimum temperatures were around 37 degrees Celsius and 29 degrees Celsius respectively, which is expected to remain the same for the next 48 hours.

    For the past few days, though the city experienced light rainfall in some areas in the evenings, the maximum temperature was around 40 degrees Celsius.

    Weathermen said the temperature recorded was 37 degrees Celsius and 38 degrees Celsius for the last two days, as there was no heavy rain and due to the hot air from the west and the sunlight along the coast.

    In the past 24 hours, The Nilgiris recorded 4 cm of rainfall, Sivaganga, Namakkal and Villupuram recorded 2 cm of rainfall, and Thanjavur, Ariyalur and Coimbatore recorded one cm of rainfall each.
