    Class 12 pass rate increases to 92.3 per cent, Tirupur dist retains number one spot

    With an overall pass percentage of 92.3%, Class 12 students in TN have come out with flying colours as results for the State board plus two exams were announced on Thursday. The overall pass percentage this year was slightly higher than previous year’s 91.3%. For the second time in a row, Tirupur district bagged the first place with 97.12% pass rate.

    Of the total 7.79 lakh students who registered for the exams, girls’ pass percentage was 94.80% and the boys scored 89.41%. The pass percentage in Chennai was 93.45, slightly higher than last year’s 92.96%. The Directorate of School Education (DSE) announced that it would continue with the practice of not declaring ranks of students. According to the DSE data, students from Science stream performed well this year too with overall pass percentage of 93.64 compared to students from other groups. The Directorate also said that 2,120 of the 7,127 schools registered 100% pass percentage, which is less than previous year’s figure of 2,634.

    Nearly 7.99 lakh students, including private candidates, registered for the exams held from March 2 to 24. Among them, 7,79,931 wrote the exams, of which 7,79,931 lakh were girls and 3,55,646 lakh boys. The date of submission of applications for re-totalling will be announced later. The DSE said those who have failed could appear for the re-examination in June and has warned private schools from advertising student’s marks to secure new admissions. “Action will be taken against schools who don’t follow rules,” the circular said. 

    ‘Engineer’ Dashwant takes Plus 2 exam in jail

    Death row convict S Dashwant, who is in jail for killing a minor girl and his mother, stood second among prison convicts who took the Plus 2 examination this year with a score of 521 out of 600. First among convicts are Pandian, an inmate of Coimbatore Central jail with 526 marks and Arunpandian bagged third place with 504 marks, a senior jail official said. Dashwant, lodged in Puzhal jail, is an engineering graduate, so it may not have been tough for him to clear the exams, however, he opted for the Commerce stream, a jail official said. Prisoners scored 96 per cent pass with 47 inmates passing out of the 49 who appeared. Four women of the total five also passed. Of the 44 men convicts who took the exam, 43 passed.
