The Madras High Court on Wednesday restrained a YouTuber from uploading defamatory videos against a Tamil news channel and also directed him to pull down the existing ones after making it clear that an individual cannot level or publish such allegations against a channel.
Chennai
Justice CV Karthikeyan offered the directions on a defamation suit moved by the channel’s editor seeking damages of Rs 1.5 crore from YouTuber Maridhas. The channel said it was forced to approach the court with the civil and criminal defamation suits after the Chennai police failed to act on their complaint lodged on July 12.
In the complaint to the police, the channel had alleged that Maridhas’s acts and videos on social media were aimed at provoking and outraging the feelings of Hindus in Tamil Nadu and that the videos would provoke the public to commit offences against the channel editor and reporters.
Udayanidhi moves court
Meanwhile, DMK youth wing leader Udayanidhi Stalin has moved a criminal defamation complaint court against YouTuber Madhan Ravichandran at XVIII Metropolitan Magistrate for allegedly making derogatory statements against him. He submitted that the videos uploaded by the accused directly damaged his hard-earned reputation and goodwill.
