Delay in distributing mark sheets worries Class 10 students

Due to the steady increase in the number of COVID cases, the State government had cancelled the SSLC board examination and declared all-pass. Following this, more than 3.5 lakh students from about 5,000 government and aided schools across the State were promoted to Class 11. As was required, the schools have submitted marks data. But the Directorate of Government Examinations is yet to declare the result, which has created a hurdle for the students in choosing their stream of study for Class 11.

However, many private schools have already admitted students in Class 11 and have even started online classes.

A senior official from the directorate told DT Next that the authorities were still scrutinising mark details submitted by the schools, and added that it would take some more time to declare the results. Following complaints from various quarters, the officials have been double checking the marks, especially given by the private schools, he added.

The headmaster of a government-aided school in the city said mark sheets were vital for Class 10 students from State-run schools as admissions to Class 11 was based only on that.

“Mark sheets are also important for the students to select the stream of their choice,” he said. Though students have an idea about their marks because 80 per cent of the mark is derived from their performance in quarterly and half-yearly exams, they do not have a clear picture of total marks, as 20 per cent of it is calculated based on attendance, he said.

S Kalaiselvi, a Class 10 of an aided school in Pallavaram, said that if she got good marks in mathematics, she would prefer taking up Commerce group. “I will consider Science group, too, if I perform better in that,” she said. B Velayutham, a Class 10 student of a government school, said the delay in distributing mark sheets would affect the prospects of students like him, who are planning to take up polytechnic courses because the document should be uploaded during registration.
