Suriya contempt row: Plea filed in SC seeking removal of HC judge

CR Jaya Sukin, in his plea, submitted that though anybody can write to the Chief Justice voicing their grievance, Justice Subramaniam had released the letter against Suriya to media houses and on social media before it could reach the Chief Justice, indicating intent for cheap publicity. Calling the whole process an abuse of the Indian judiciary and against principles of natural justice, the plea contended that every institution in a democracy has to earn the public’s affection and respect and be open to public scrutiny.

“The letter by Justice Subramaniam will deter people expressing critical views on the judiciary. Stifling of criticism by stakeholders does not bode well for any institution,” the plea said. Quoting the letter written by six judges and 25 other HC lawyers in support of Suriya that his statement was not a contemptuous act, the plea sought for Justice Subramaniam’s removal.
