S Nagendran, a resident of Kanni Chetti Street in Velankanni in Nagapattinam, who has been running a lathe in the locality, was thinking of designing a device to rescue children from the borewells as he was pained after witnessing several incidents of kids getting stuck and dying in abandoned borewells, including the recent Manapparai incident in which two-year-old Sujith Wilson lost his life after several days of efforts by various groups using several modern gadgets.
“After developing a series of designs, I finalized this type which in my observation will be successful in rescuing children from borewells with different weights and sizes. I had demonstrated the device before the public in front of my lathe,” Nagendran said.
He said that the device would be connected with a camera and monitored through a laptop throughout the rescue operation. “Within 30 minutes, the child can be lifted safely atop”, he stressed. He had spent just Rs 20,000 for the device and had experimented with the device with dolls and it worked out well. Meanwhile, he said that the device would be demonstrated before the collector for wich he has sought an appointment through officials.
