No loans, applicants get thank you letters for housing under PMAY
Several people who were yet to avail the benefits of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana- Urban (PMAY-U) were shocked to receive appreciation letters from the Centre for construction of houses.

Manickam (55), an agricultural coolie living in Kurinjankulam Street, Ariyalur was planning to replace his own as well as his sister Rani’s thatched homes via the PMAY (U) scheme. He met officials last year, who conducted a field study and accepted his application. However, Manickam, who did not have adequate funds, dropped the plan and informed the officials.
A few months later, Manickam and his sister received a letter of appreciation separately undersigned by Amrit Abhijat, Joint Secretary and Mission Director PMAY (U). The letter thanked both for ‘constructing’ the house under the scheme and also asked the beneficiaries to upload the photo of their house in the App which would be recommended for awards. A baffled Manickam immediately approached the officials, but in vain. “I suspect someone else used our names and got money credited. A proper enquiry needs to be conducted,” Manickam said.
The Ariyalur Municipal officials said they can’t do mauch in the matter as their job ends with sending the application. Similar letters were received by beneficiaries residing at Mothilal Street in Mannargudi, Tiruvarur. A total of 35 people applied under the PMAY (U) scheme but were yet to receive any fund. Yet, they all received letters of appreciation. “We suspect a mega scam here, almost similar to the PMKSNY scheme,” said G Saravanan, one of the applicants.
