Though the North East Monsoon was predicted to lash the region, there was no sign of showers till 1 pm on Friday. But afterwards, the rain started with a mild shower and within minutes, there was a heavy downpour across the district that left everyone into a staggering situation.

Following heavy rain, the residents, who were planning to do last minute Deepavali purchases could not come out of their houses as all the interior and arterial roads were under thick sheets of water and some places witnessed heavy traffic snarls.

Unfortunately, NSB Road, the major business hub in Tiruchy, which used to witness feverish business all through the days, especially on Deepavali eve, had come to a standstill with knee deep water.

The traders, who were expecting good business in the evening hours, sat with fingers crossed as people movement was choked due to the water stagnation in almost all the key spots dampening festival cheers. However, things looked up after 6 pm. Though there was a mild shower, people braved it to resume their purchases.
