‘Surprise’ seizure: DVAC finds 117 sovereigns at V’nagar RTO
While raids usually yield an unusually large sum of money, sleuths of the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti Corruption (DVAC) chanced upon 117 sovereigns of gold jewellery in a major operation at the Regional Transport Office in Virudhunagar on Saturday.

A team led by Deputy Superintendent of Police P Karuppaiah not only seized unaccounted cash worth Rs 25, 66,880, but also the gold jewellery. Karuppaiah said the seizure took place after two cars were intercepted, in which Motor Vehicle Inspectors Kalaiselvi (Virudhunagar) and Shanmuga Ananth (Madurai North) were traveling, near Sithireddipatti around 9.30 am. Cash worth Rs 7, 850 was also seized from Arul Prasath, a broker. The DVAC team is investigating the Motor Vehicle Inspectors and the broker to ascertain where they got the money and gold from.
In a surprise raid at the RTO checkpost in Puliyarai, Tenkasi district, Rs 48,270 was seized on Saturday, Tirunelveli Deputy Superintendent of Police Mcclarine Eskhol said. The raid was carried out based on complaints that a surcharge of Rs 200 was being collected from heavy vehicle users at the checkpost for permit pass to vehicles bound for Kerala. In Theni, Rs 5,500 was seized from a transport check post at PC Patti. In Kanniyakumari, Rs 64,140 and Rs 20,740 were seized from the transport check post at Kaliyakavilai and at police check post in Padanthalmoodu respectively.
From Hosur checkpost in Krishnagiri district, Rs 1.84 lakh was seized, Rs 1.30 lakh was seized from two border check posts near Vellore, followed by Rs 1.06 lakh in Nazarethpet in Tiruvallur district, while Rs 87,000 was seized at Walayar check post in Coimbatore. Rs 20,740 was seized from the check post in Kaliyakkavilai in Kanniyakumari district.
