TIRUCHY: The city Corporation has set up a striking force for mass cleaning programmes, while the council members demanded transparency in the appointment of the team.

The concept of the striking force for the sanitation programme was introduced in the Corporation council meeting chaired by Mayor Mu Anbalagan on Friday. The Mayor, while detailing the programme said, each zone would get an 11-member team and they would select a particular ward on a specific day and involve in the sanitation programme, including clearing of the blocks in UGD lines.

He said that as a trial basis, the works commenced in one ward, which would be expanded soon. The Mayor said that this programme would have additional manpower.

Soon, members raised concerns about the selection of the team. “There should be transparency in the appointment despite the fact that they are involved on contract basis,” said DMK member T Muthuselvam.

Subsequently, other members too joined him. They charged that there is no transparency in the daily activities and even the members are not informed on certain developments and the striking force is one among them.

The Mayor said that the process has been undertaken by officials as it has no connection with the elected members. Soon, Muthuselvam accused that only officials are ruling the Corporation and not the elected members. “Please keep us informed about new programmes,” Muthuselvam said.

Later, the members listed several issues, including cattle menace and drinking water issues and demanded to resolve them. The Mayor said that the civic body has been working to provide drinking water round-the-clock soon after the completion of UGD works.
