Bharathiar varsity students hold demo over poor quality food
Over 100 students squatted in front of the university’s main entrance with plates and buckets along with placards. They alleged that they were given food infested with worms and insects.
COIMBATORE: Students of Bharathiar University staying in the institution’s girls hostels resorted to a protest on Tuesday morning condemning inferior quality of food.
Over 100 students squatted in front of the university’s main entrance with plates and buckets along with placards. They alleged that they were given food infested with worms and insects. They also claimed that water supply was erratic in the hostels. The students said that they have raised a complaint with the warden and university authorities over the last four months, but to no avail. They have also dropped grievances in a complaint box, which was not looked into at all.
The students said that earlier food was prepared separately for students of each of the eight hostels, when its quality was good. However, over the last few months, food has been prepared for all 1,500 odd students from all hostels combined and therefore, the quality has gone for a toss. Following talks by police, the students withdrew their protest.
University authorities also assured to look into the demands of students and improve the quality of food served in the hostel.
