TIRUCHY: Mayor Mu Anbalagan on Monday blamed the AIADMK for the delay in underground drainage and drinking water line projects in the city. Since, the tender floated for the UGD and drinking water line projects were given to unqualified persons during the previous AIADMK government, the works were on at a snail’s pace and the civic administration has warned them to complete the project within the tender period of March 2023, the Mayor said.
Speaking to reporters, the Mayor said the UGD and Water pipeline project works commenced in 2018-19 for which a tender for 848 km length was floated during the previous AIADMK government and the tender was allotted to the unqualified persons.
“Despite the works were for the people’s development, the elected members had shown least interest on the progress of the works and thus they could complete only 150 km length for all these years. After the change in the government and me taking charge, the contractors were invited for a meeting and they were instructed to complete the project within the tender period and thus after, we, took charge and accelerating the contractors, the works were completed to a stretch of 479 km within six months,” Anbalagan said.
The remaining works were asked to be completed by March 2023, within the tender period, he said. “Out of the total works, we have completed 65 per cent,” he said.
Meanwhile, ahead of the north east monsoon, the storm water drainages to a stretch of 167 km has been cleared and all the 37 channels in the city have been desilted and the free water flow has been ensured, he said.
