TIRUCHY: Family members of a 37-year-old man from Tiruvarur, who went to Kuwait for employment and reportedly shot dead by the employer after he refused to take care of the camels, took out a protest rally in Tiruvarur on Tuesday demanding the government to take immediate steps to bring his body back here.
Sources said R Muthukumar, a resident from Koradacherry in Tiruvarur, was running a vegetable shop in the same locality.
As there was no much income from the vegetable business, he decided to go abroad to earn more and contacted an agent, who arranged for a job in a supermarket in Kuwait.
Accepting the job, Muthukumar reached Kuwait on September 3.
When he reported for duty on September 4, the employer had reportedly asked him to maintain his camels instead of assigning work in the supermarket. Immediately, Muthukumar contacted his wife, Vidya and parents and narrated his experiences till September 5. After that, the family members did not receive any call from Muthukumar.
Meanwhile, on September 9, Divya came to know that Muthukumar was reportedly tortured and shot dead by the employer for refusing to take care of the camels.
Family members then approached the Tiruvarur Collector and submitted a petition demanding to bring back the body and action against the local agent, who sent Muthukumar to Kuwait and the employer.
Meanwhile, on Tuesday evening, the family members along with residents of Koradacherry and members of various political parties, took out a rally demanding justice for Muthukumar and compensation to his family members.
The rally commenced from Lakshmangudi Bridge and reached the Tahsildhar office via Mannargudi and submitted a petition with Tahsildhar Somasundaram.
