CHENNAI: Even as the translocation of cheetahs is making global headlines, Chennai Raj Bhavan may also witness similar wildlife translocation, where blackbuck and spotted deer populations will be introduced to enhance the gene population of ungulates in Guindy National Park that comprises the Raj Bhavan.

“Raj Bhavan may soon bring in blackbucks from wild. There are issues concerning the deer population in Raj Bhavan and adjoining areas. A lot of trees had been planted thus reducing the grassland area and a team of experts are attending to it,” the Governor told DT Next.

Further, the blackbuck population introduced into Raj Bhavan a century ago is suffering from massive inbreeding. The forest department is aware of the issue and we are open to the idea of introducing a new deer population. From where the new animals will be brought will be decided by TN foresters,” confidential Raj Bhavan sources said.
