CHENNAI: The Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT) ordered a duo to pay Rs.41.42 lakh compensation to the family of a construction worker, who died in 2018. The MACT passed the orders since the construction worker succumbed to death after a youth hit the former with his speeding bike during a bike race at Thiruvanmiyur.

T Chandrasekaran, Chief Judge, Court of Small Cases, passed the orders on disposing of a petition filed by R Stella and C Sathyapriya - mother and wife of the deceased man named R Joseph.

The petitioners sought direction to M Dinesh Kumar - who drove the bike and caused the accident and the bike owner named M Shankar to give Rs.22.25 lakh as compensation for killing Joseph.

"When Joseph and others had gone to the Tea shop in the early morning of July 15, 2018, Dinesh and three others were involved in the bike race. The bikers were from Neelankarai and drove towards Choolaimedu at high speed. When Joseph moved towards the tea shop, Dinesh hit Joseph and the latter fell with grave injuries and lost his life, the petitioners submitted.

The petitioners further submitted that Dinesh did not have a license and vehicle insurance for the two-wheeler.

Recording the submissions, the judge ordered Dinesh and Shankar to pay Rs.41.42 lakh as compensation to the family of the deceased.
