CHENNAI: In a move helping a differently-abled girl to pursue her dream course, the state issued orders to admit the candidate in the government Fine Arts College at Kumbakonam. CPM MP Su Venkatesan, who conveyed the girl’s issue to the government, on Wednesday thanked the state administration for providing the seat.

T Lakshmi, who had lost both her hands, wanted to join the government Fine Arts College in Kumbakonam and wrote the entrance exam by drawing with her legs. Out of the total 281, who appeared for the entrance, 141 were selected, but Lakhsmi could not make it as she was short by 20 marks. Knowing the issue, Venkatesan appealed to Chief Minister MK Stalin and Industries Minister Thangam Thennarasu, who is also in-charge of the Department of Art and Culture, to admit Lakshmi in a fine arts college. As there were only 65 seats in Kumbakonam and all were filled, the state, for the sake of admitting Lakshmi, increased the total seats to 66 and issued a Government Order (GO) to give effect to the increase in intake.

Venkatesan, sharing the GO on Twitter, said “it is the beauty of democracy to tweak rules for marginalized and differently-abled persons. I am overjoyed. Hearty thanks to the Chief Minister and Thangam Thennarasu.”
