62 per cent passengers in town buses are women
According to government data, as many as 176.84 crore trips have been taken by women in free buses since May 8, 2021. Of the total free trips, more than 10 lakh are by transgenders.
CHENNAI: With more than 62 per cent of the passengers in government buses being women, around 177 crore trips have been taken by them since May 2021.

Moreover, persons with disabilities took 1.29 lakh trips. Interestingly, only 102.83 crore trips have taken by payment basis, which are lesser than free trips. On an average, 39.21 lakh trips are being taken by women passengers every day.
The State government issued a government order to allow free travel for women in local buses including MTC buses on May 7. Transgenders and persons with disabilities were allowed to travel without fare from June 3, 2021.
