Engineering student kills self after losing money in online rummy
Frustrated over the scolding by his parents, Santhosh, who left for college on Thursday morning, did not attend the classes.
TIRUCHY: A 23-year-old engineering student, committed suicide by jumping in front of a train in Manapparai near Tiruchy on Thursday after losing several thousands of rupees while playing online rummy.
Sources said, R Santhosh, a third year engineering student from Malayadipatti near Manapparai, was said to be addicted to the online rummy. Santhosh was in the habit of taking away his mother’s jewels to play rummy online. When his parents searched for the missing jewels, they found that Santhosh was taking them away and scolded him.
Frustrated over the scolding by his parents, Santhosh, who left for college on Thursday morning, did not attend the classes.
However, neighbours informed the parents that the body of Santhosh was lying on the railway track at Nalangadi. Soon they rushed to the spot while the railway police retrieved the body and sent it for post-mortem. Police said that he jumped in front of the train and the body was cut into two pieces. The parents confirmed that the victim was Santosh.
Before committing suicide, Santhosh had reportedly posted a statement on his WhatsApp status mentioning that online rummy was the reason for his extreme step and he lost huge sums in the game. Further investigations are on.
