COIMBATORE: More than 300 houses were flooded in parts of Erode district as water overflowed into residential areas from Thalakulam Lake in Bhavani following heavy overnight rains. Residents woke up in the middle of night panicked as water entered their houses in areas such as Thottipalayam old Colony, Manakattu Colony and Tiruvalluvar Nagar. A panchayat union primary school near Thottipalayam bus stop was declared holiday on Friday due to water stagnation. Vehicular movement was disrupted in most of these areas as roads came under a pool of water. Similarly, vehicles were suspended for around five hours from 6 am to 11 am through a couple of causeways from Soosaipuram to Beemraj Nagar due to overflowing water. However, water began to recede as rains stopped during the day. Meanwhile, the Stanley Reservoir in Mettur realised a surge in inflow of 45,000 cusecs on Friday, 8 am following heavy rains in Cauvery catchment areas. The entire surplus water has been discharged from the dam, which got filled up on October 12. Also, inflow at Biligundlu continued to remain steady with around 50,000 cusecs.
