Tech Next: Deep dive into the future of tech with this foldable phone

It’s a phone one moment and then unfolds into a tablet-style display the next; but it’s more complex than it looks. Over the past few months we’ve seen a slew of devices from Huawei, Microsoft to the uber cool Moto Razr that suggest that the foldable display is likely to be one of the big tech trends for 2020.

Never judge a book by its cover. That’s what Samsung will tell you about the 4.6-inch external display on the Fold. This one almost borders on retro but you’ll end up using this screen only for calls and text replies, almost like a pre-smartphone era device. But flip it open and it’s another world. A gorgeous 7.3-inch AMOLED display that’s great for video consumption, large-screen gaming (We tested PUBG on this device) and flipping through e-books. A sophisticated hinge with multiple interlocking gears keeps this device safe. You will see a fold especially when you’re on white-screen mode with an e-book but it’s something that barely bothers you while catching videos. The camera cut-out is not that easy to ignore though but put this display against any other smartphone and it comes out on top with its extra screen real estate.

It’s a hardware beast, powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor with 12GB of RAM and 512GB of Internal memory. The hardware prowess extends to the camera with six-lenses in the mix. The Fold is in the same league as Samsung’s other flagship cams of 2019 like the Note 10+ and delivers across scenarios including lowlight and videos. At 263 gm, it’s certainly no lightweight; part of that heft can be attributed to a 4830 mAh battery. The device doesn’t disappoint on the battery life front but it’s still no match for the Note 10+. The Samsung Galaxy Fold doesn’t come cheap but that’s true for any cutting edge tech. The Galaxy Fold, give us a peek into this not so distant future, yet it’s too early to say if the foldable display is here to stay or just a flavour of the season. (Rs 1,64,999)
