Sethum Aayiram Pon became the first Tamil film to have its release on OTT streaming service directly without getting a theatrical release.
The film released on Netflix India last week under the Indie films category. Talking to DT Next, Anand said, “The film deals with inter-personal relationship between a granddaughter and her grandmother. It is a proper drama that talks about applying make-up for the deceased before the funeral We have also spoken about ‘oppari’, (a form of lamenting common in rural Tamil Nadu).” Anand said that he is in fact happy that the film released on Netflix directly. “OTT platforms are perfect for alternate cinema. Viewers do not miss any good film that releases on these platforms and they discuss about it on social media as well. I don’t think there would have been any takers for the movie had it released in theatres because Sethum Aayiram Pon is just a 100-minute watch,” he added.
Talking about the cast, the director said, “Nivedhithaa Sathish of Sillu Karupatti fame and television artiste Srilekha Rajendran have played lead roles. Avinash Raghuvendan has played the make-up artiste in the film.”
