Producers of the Tamil cinema industry are going through a tough time with movie shoots likely to be delayed till July. As of now, K’wood has incurred a loss of over Rs 500 core. Malayalam film bodies have requested actors to reduce their salary by 50 per cent. However, Tamil industry chose to remain silent and there was no word from any of the leading actors as well. On Tuesday, Vijay Antony made an announcement that he would reduce his salary by Rs 1 crore for his next three films (Thamizarasan, Agni Siragugal, and Khaki). Talking to DT Next, he said, “I have been a producer and I know how difficult it is. The interest rates are sky high and this is something I could do from my end to help movie makers.” Vijay Antony said that he didn’t do this so that other actors could follow suit. “I am not trying to make any statement. The industry is going through a bad phase. Moreover, there have been talks that the shoots would resume only by July or August. I am not going to wait until that. I will be back to shoot the day government lifts the lockdown and help my producers to complete their films,” he added. The actor is also planning to quarantine himself from his family. “After I resume my work, I would be staying away from my family for a few months as I don’t want to put them in trouble. I am their bread-winner and I need to get out and earn and at the same time, I shouldn’t be putting their lives at risk.” T Siva, the producer of Vijay Antony’s Agni Siragugal lauded him and said, “It is very kind of Vijay Antony to accept salary reduction considering the situation we are in due to the lockdown for over 50 days. We request that all actors and technicians should come forward and accept reduced salaries so that the overall cost of all the current film producers reduces to tide over this crisis that all of us are facing currently.
