CMRL has invited bids of procuring cycles and comprehensive annual maintenance for a period of five years. The bid would be finalized on March 24. Unlike in the past when separate cycles were procured for men and women, CMRL has decided to go for unisex bicycles this time, understandably, to cater to men who have been using the free bicycles more than women.
Launched by CMRL to extend last mile connectivity to metro travellers to reach stations from their work place/residence and vice versa, free bicycle service is available at around a dozen stations, including underground stations like Shenoy Nagar, Anna Nagar Tower, Thirumangalam, Pachaiyappa’s, Kilpauk and Nehru Park now.
Ekkaduthangal station, which was the first to launch the bicycle service, has a maximum of ten cycles.
CMRL imposes Rs 50 per day if the user does not return the bicycle within 24 hours. In the event of lost/theft of bicycle, CMRL charges Rs 5,000 per cycle, wherein an additional Rs 2,000 would be collected from the user after adjusting the Rs 3,000 security deposit already paid by him/her. CMRL has also been partnering with a private player who offers 100 hours free hiring at six stations. Users must submit identity proof issued either by the state or central government. Refundable deposit would be returned by station controllers to users who do not want to avail bicycle service.
