“The price of drumstick had touched even Rs 400 per kg about two weeks ago. As the supply started to increase from last week, it was being sold for Rs 250 per kg. On Sunday, the traders here received eight truckloads of drumstick from Dharapuram and Oddanchatram in Tamil Nadu, and also from Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra,” said P Sukumaran, secretary, Koyambedu Wholesale Merchants’ Association. “The prices might reduce further to Rs 40 to Rs 50 per kg from next week,” Sukumaran added.
It is not just drumstick, but the prices of other vegetables, too, have decreased, he said. Now, onions are being sold for Rs 50 to Rs 90 per kg, tomato for Rs 15 to Rs 20 per kg, potato for Rs 30 to Rs 35 per kg, beans for Rs 40 per kg, peas for Rs 70 to Rs 75 per kg, and carrot for Rs 40 per kg.
Flower vendors, too, have recorded a fall in prices, as there is more supply in the market. However, unlike in the case of vegetables, the sale has decreased from Friday, traders said.
“The sale has come down in the last two days. But there might be an increase in sale from new year. Currently, jasmine is being sold for Rs 850 – Rs 900 per kg, jasmine sambac for Rs 600 – Rs 750 per kg, pink jasmine Rs 300 – Rs 360 per kg, marigold Rs 100 – Rs 170 per kg, tuberose Rs 90 – Rs 120 per kg, damask rose Rs 100 – Rs 120 per kg and rose Rs 160 – Rs 180 per kg,” said S Mookandi, secretary, Koyambedu Flower Merchants Association.
