After they noticed the metal protruding on the ground near the Bhavani Amman temple, they dug the ground and were puzzled since it looked like unexploded ammunition. After they alerted police, a team from Periyapalayam police station rushed to the spot and retrieved it.

It was produced before the DSP N C Sarathi and upon instructions from the district superintendent P Aravindhan, the shell was taken to Gummidipoondi and kept along with other ammunition which is being destroyed by the expert team from the Army. Police suspect that the shell could have been dumped at the spot at least 15 years ago and added that Bomb detection and disposal squad would check if the shell is still potent.

It may be recalled that 1,628 ammunition materials retrieved from steel plants are being destroyed safely by the Army experts since March 20.
