Amid Nemmeli desalination plant work water shortage in OMR

CHENNAI: From the Nemmeli seawater desalination plant water is supplied to areas in Sholinganallur and Perungudi zones.

Both these zones require 45 million litres of water per day. But currently, only 38 million litres are being supplied. Of this, 28 million litres are sent from Nemmeli and 10 million litres from Veeraanam river water.

In this situation, the supply of drinking water at Nemmeli drinking water station has been stopped due to maintenance work.

Due to this, there is a severe water shortage in Sholinganallur and Perungudi zones. In this case, the public is demanding to increase the water supply through lorries.

In this regard, the general public says, "For the last 6 weeks, the Nemmeli drinking water plant has been frequently closed for maintenance. The water supply has been affected as a result.

Water pressure and distribution are poor even on normal days. It takes 2 days to deliver water, even after booking metro water lorries. At present, we are relying on private water tanker lorries, "they said.

An official of the Drinking Water Board said, "Currently, an additional 150 million litre water production plant is being built at this plant. Once it is ready, the supply of drinking water will increase. We are currently discussing temporary measures to find a permanent solution to the water problem.
