FSSAI officials seize over 100 kg of stale fish from Coimbatore markets

COIMBATORE: Officials of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) on Tuesday seized over 100 kg of stale fish from the market in Coimbatore.

Six teams comprising FSSAI authorities led by designated officer Tamil Selvan and staff of the fisheries department carried out raids in shops at the wholesale market in Lorrypet and the retail market on the Selvapuram by-pass road.

“Of the total 103 kg of rotten fish, around 65 kg was seized from five shops in the wholesale market and 38 kg from the retail market. The seized fish, which were worth around Rs 50, 150 was destroyed,” said an official.

The FSSAI authorities have issued notices to nine shops seeking an explanation for selling stale fish. District Collector Kranthi Kumar Pati warned of stringent action against shops selling rotten fish as consuming it may cause health issues to people.
