Stalin firm not to allow introduction of Citizenship Act in Tamil Nadu
Stalin gave a recall of DMK government passing a resolution demanding the withdrawal of CAA in 2021 in the State assembly shortly after coming to power
CHENNAI: Reiterating his opposition to the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), Chief Minister MK Stalin on Wednesday said that his government would never allow the enforcement of the CAA in Tamil Nadu.
Chief Minister Stalin was reacting to the statement of Union Minister of state for Shipping Shantanu Thakur who claimed that CAA would be implemented not only in West Bengal, but the whole country in a week.
Taking to social media to reaffirm his categorical opposition to the controversial legislation granting citizenship to people belonging to different faiths, except Islam from several neighbouring countries, Chief Minister Stalin said that the favourable vote cast by the AIADMK in the Parliament was the primary reason for the Citizenship Amendment Bill, which is against the Lankan Tamils and Muslims, becoming a law.
Despite being an opposition party then, the DMK, apart from organising major protests along with the allies, had also collected two crore signatures and sent them to the President, the CM said, in a message posted with the hashtag #NoCAAinTamilNadu on his “X” handle on Wednesday.
Recalling the resolution adopted in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly seeking the repeal of the CAA after the DMK returned to power in 2021, Chief Minister Stalin said that, “The DMK government would never permit implementation of the CAA in Tamil Nadu.” Remarking that the people of the country were watching the ruling BJP’s treacherous acts that are detrimental to communal harmony and deceptive dramas of the AIADMK supporting such acts, the CM said, “I say with certainty. We will not allow CAA to enter Tamil Nadu.”
