Soon, Modi to clear decks to increase production efficiency at IGCAR

A joint initiative of NTPC (national Thermal Power Corporation), BHEL (Bharat Heavy Electrical Limited) and IGCAR succeeded in increasing the efficiency of steam used in boilers from the normal 37% to more than 45%, sources added. “NTPC was roped in as it handles all coal based thermal stations in the country, while BHEL Trichy are experts in boiler making for steam turbines. The success of the mission will be used for IGCAR exclusively,” officials said. 

Chetal was IGCAR director since 2011 and retired in 2013 being succeeded by PR Vasudeva Rao. A BARC (Bhaba Atomic Research Centre) trained hand, Chetal joined IGCAR in 1971 and made major and significant contributions to the FBTR (Fast Breeder Test Reactor) at Kalpakkam.

Top officials said Chetal had encyclopaedic knowledge of the systems used in Kalpakkam and since he had an important role in the research, development, engineering, materials and manufacturing of the PFBR (Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor), he was the obvious choice to take the new development further. 

Under his tutelage, Kalpakkam also developed on the environment front as intensified tree planting campaign resulted in the area having lower summer temperature than Chennai The lush landscape also saw more than 150 species of winged visitors and more than 60 butterfly flocking to the area. 

Prime minister Narendra Modi is expected to clear the decks in a few days. Chetal is expected to be based in New Delhi and coordinate efforts between the national capital and Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research.
